Scoville Heat Units (SHU): 0–500 SHU (effectively heatless, occasionally up to 500 SHU, but usually perceived as sweet).
Flavour Profile: Very sweet, mild, and aromatic; no real pungency. Traditional use is in stir-fries and salads, especially in the green or red-ripe stage, where sweetness peaks. Used fresh, sautéed, pickled, or as a garnish in Japanese cuisine.
Origin: Japan; heirloom from Nara prefecture, considered a "Yamato dento yasai" (special traditional vegetable).
Species: Capsicum Annuum.
Plant Description: Stringy, thin peppers 4–6in long and up to ¼in diameter, resembling hanging strings; pods ripen green to red, smooth skin but bumpy texture. Bushy plants grow 2–3ft tall, extremely prolific, well-adapted to container or field growing.
