Flavour Profile: Brightly fruity and citrusy, with notes of tropical fruit and a moderate to strong burn that builds slowly and lingers. The flavour is clean, tangy, and sweet, making it prized for salsas, sauces, marinades, and spice blends.
Origin: Native to the Amazonian jungles of Peru—especially revered in the Loreto and San Martin regions. In Peru, it’s known as “the gold of the Incas” and is valued in local cuisine and for export.
Species: Capsicum Chinense.
Plant Description:
Growth Habit: Bushy, compact perennial that can reach 60–150cm (up to 1.5m) in height; thrives in full sun and well-drained soil; does not tolerate cold.
Pods: Tiny, round, pea-sized peppers (0.5–1cm diameter); ripen green to vivid gold to yellow/orange. Pods are thin-walled, glossy, and firm.
Yield: Highly productive; a single plant can produce hundreds or thousands of pods per season.
Ornamental Appeal: White flowers and small, vibrant pods make it popular in gardens and containers.
Use & Maintenance: Seeds germinate in 10–15 days, with pods maturing in 100–140 days. Grows well in containers ≥12in, prefers full sun, and needs warm conditions to set fruit.
