Romania’s pepper sector blends traditional cultivation and scientific innovation. Landmark research projects at Buzău Plant Genetic Resources Bank led to the breeding of “goat’s horn” and ultra-hot Buzău peppers, which reached 2.4 million Scoville units—touted as among the world’s hottest varieties.

Romanian farmers also grow classic heritage types like the Transylvanian hot pepper and Gogosari sweet pepper, prized for colour, flavour, and early fruiting. Green chili and pepper production reached 105,000 tonnes in 2022, supporting both local cuisine and processing industries. Innovative breeding, ongoing heritage preservation, and regional culinary passion maintain Romania’s role as a dynamic European player in pepper agriculture.
