Collection: Nepal
Nepal’s chili sector is essential to rural livelihoods, nutrition, and culture, particularly in provinces like Bagmati, Lumbini, and Koshi, which are the main production zones. In addition to smallholder plots, some commercial farms have started cultivating local favorites such as Akabare and Dalle Khursani—chilis known for intense flavour and round, compact form.
In 2022, dry chili pepper production reached nearly 84,000 tonnes, yet soaring demand means that Nepal still imports substantial quantities from India and China to bridge the gap. The government and NGOs have ramped up initiatives aiming for higher yields, improved seed stock, and sustainable pest management.
Chilis are enjoyed fresh, dried, or pickled and play a prominent role in everyday meals, with Dalle Khursani even achieving Geographical Indication (GI) status for its unique regional identity. Supporting and expanding Nepal’s chili industry remains a key focus for boosting both food security and export potential.
