Malawi grows a mix of bird’s eye chili, cayenne, and local hot pepper varieties as high-value cash crops for domestic and export markets, particularly for the spice trade. The main production zones are in the southern and central regions, with many smallholder farmers engaged in contract farming with exporters.

Malawi’s peppers are valued for their heat and colour, featuring in food processing and African sauces abroad. Agricultural NGOs and government projects support farmers with improved seed, irrigation, and market access.
