Laos has rapidly expanded its hot pepper industry by integrating contract farming and Chinese hybrid varieties, supporting both export and domestic markets. In 2024, demonstration farms in partnership with Chinese companies produced over 150,000 tons of peppers, with most exports headed to China’s growing spice markets.

The Lao government, international organizations, and private investors promote improved seed quality, farming cooperatives, and the adoption of IPM (integrated pest management) for sustainable production. Chili yields average between 12,000 and 270,000 tons annually, including a mix of smallholder and commercial farms.

Provincial programs especially target rural women for agricultural livelihoods, making chili one of Laos’ most important horticultural crops for both income and food security.
