Collection: Heard Island and the McDonald Islands
Heard Island and the McDonald Islands are uninhabited Australian sub-Antarctic territories with no permanent population, agriculture, or cuisine. Consequently, no hot-pepper production or local pepper dishes exist.
Any Capsicum that might appear would be carried by scientific expeditions or naval vessels, consisting of imported generic varieties such as jalapeño, cayenne, or bird’s eye chili for use in standard shipboard recipes.
There are no native or regionally adapted chili cultivars, no greenhouses or gardens, and no pepper-based industry at any scale. References to hot peppers in connection with these islands relate only to provisions brought from Australia or elsewhere, not to locally grown or culturally embedded varieties.
